Abstract

Objective: To characterize healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) developed in patients hospitalized for cancer treatment at a referral center in Teresina, Piauí. Methods: This is a retrospective, descriptive study conducted between 2023 and 2024. The study population consisted of all cancer patients who developed healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) during hospitalization. Data were obtained through analysis of electronic medical records. Results: During the analyzed period, it was observed that, in 2023, 13.29% of cancer patients developed HAIs. In 2024, 13.51% of cases were recorded. The results indicate that, in 2023, most cases occurred in female patients (59.52%), while, in 2024, there was a predominance of male patients (55.55%). The most frequently identified microorganisms in 2023 were Klebsiella pneumoniae (30%), and in 2024, Acinetobacter baumannii (20.00%) stood out for its greatest representation. Conclusion: The findings of this study reinforce the need for effective care measures and continuous microbiological monitoring, considering the vulnerability of cancer patients when exposed to multidrug-resistant microorganisms.
