Abstract
Objective: To retrospectively analyze cytopathological examinations in women residing in the municipality of Codó, Maranhão, Brazil, between 2018 and 2023. Methods: This is a descriptive, retrospective, quantitative epidemiological study, conducted through consultation of the Cancer Information System database. Cytopathological examination records of women aged 25 to 64 years, residing in the municipality of Codó-Maranhão, in the Northeast Region, were collected, considering the period from 2018 to 2023, and the following variables: reason for the examination (screening, repetition, follow-up), sample adequacy, epithelium represented, and altered results. Results: 14,993 results of cervical cytopathological examinations of women aged 25 to 64 years were analyzed, the target age group of the cervical cancer screening program, whose main reason for performing the cytopathological examination was screening in 99.87% of the examinations. Conclusion: Low adherence to and coverage of cervical cancer screening was observed among women in the age range recommended by the World Health Organization.
