Abstract

Objective: To present the consequences of prolonged urinary catheter use during hospitalization. Literature review: It is crucial to raise awareness among healthcare professionals, patients, and their families about the consequences of prolonged urinary catheter use during hospitalization. Prolonged urinary catheter use is directly associated with an increased risk of device-related urinary tract infection and urethral injuries. There is a significant increase in this risk after 72 hours of use, and failures in aseptic technique during catheter insertion and maintenance are determining factors for infection. Final considerations: The consequences of prolonged urinary catheter use during hospitalization are relevant and should be considered in clinical practice. It is essential that healthcare professionals act proactively in prevention and proper management, aiming to ensure the safety, comfort, and quality of life of patients.
