Abstract

Objective: To assess the level of autonomy in health care among patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis, with the aim of quantifying the impact of this autonomy on quality of life, considering the social, cultural, and family aspects involved. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach, conducted at a Nephrology Unit. The Patient Activation Measure (PAM-13) and the WHOQOL-BREF instruments were used to measure, respectively, patient autonomy in care and quality of life. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee under opinion no. 6,896,405, and data collection took place from July to September 2024. Results: The initial sample consisted of 83 patients, with a final sample of 55 participants. It was observed that 96.36% of patients presented activation levels between 3 and 4, with 58.18% classified at level 3 and 38.18% at level 4, indicating high engagement and proactivity in self-care. A positive association was found between greater autonomy in daily activities and better quality of life scores. Conclusion: Peritoneal dialysis was shown to promote autonomy in health care, which was reflected in better quality of life indicators. This therapeutic modality demonstrated lower dependence on hospitalizations and medical visits, as well as greater self-management of treatment, supporting its expected clinical and care effectiveness.
