Oncology patients' perception about the importance of the dentist in the multidicisplinary team in the hospital environment

Abstract

Objective: To assess the perception of oncology patients regarding the functions and contributions of the dentist during hospital-based chemotherapy treatment. Methods: This descriptive, quantitative study was conducted with 21 oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy in a private hospital in Maceió, Brazil. The sample was selected by convenience, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire addressing the importance, functions, and contributions of the dentist within the multidisciplinary team. The questionnaire was administered individually during care in the chemotherapy unit. The responses were analyzed descriptively, identifying patients’ level of knowledge and perception about the dentist’s role in the hospital setting. Results: Most participants demonstrated partial knowledge about the dentist’s role in oncology treatment. Of the total, 57.14% recognized the dentist’s importance in the prevention and treatment of oral problems; 57.14% were aware of the need for dental evaluation before, during, and after chemotherapy; 66.66% knew about oral complications and preventive measures; 52.38% understood the dentist’s contribution to cost reduction and infection prevention; and 42.85% knew about dental procedures performed in hospitals. Conclusion: The findings indicate an information gap, highlighting the need for greater integration of dentists into oncology teams to promote more comprehensive and humanized care.
