Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of the Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST) for screening malnutrition risk in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: This observational study was conducted in two dialysis centers and a nephrology outpatient clinic. Patients with CKD stages 4 and 5, either on conservative treatment or on dialysis, were included. The MST was applied by non-nutrition healthcare professionals. As reference standards, the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) and the Malnutrition Clinical Characteristics (MCC) were applied by a trained dietitian. Results: A total of 127 patients were evaluated (mean age 66 ± 14 years). The MST identified malnutrition risk in 28% of participants, similar to the SGA (28%) and the MCC (29%). MST accuracy was 95%, with a sensitivity of 89% compared with the SGA and 91% compared with the MCC. Specificity was 97%, with an area under the ROC curve of 0.94 for both diagnostic methods. Reliability was excellent (kappa = 0.88). Conclusion: The study demonstrated that the MST is a simple, accurate, and highly reliable tool for screening malnutrition risk in patients with CKD stages 4 and 5, and can be used by different healthcar5 and essionals.
