Abstract

Objective: To analyze the scientific production on the experience of grandparents who care for their grandchildren in Latin America, identifying the main challenges, experiences, and social, cultural, and emotional impacts arising from this role. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted, including empirical articles published between 2014 and 2024 in Latin American scientific databases. Thirteen studies were selected, focusing on grandparents’ caregiving experiences in contexts of vulnerability, multigenerational family arrangements, and parental absence. Results: The studies reveal that grandparents—especially grandmothers—often assume parental functions due to parental absence caused by work, migration, separation, illness, or abandonment. Grandparenthood presents an ambivalent nature: it strengthens intergenerational bonds and provides a sense of social usefulness, yet also leads to physical, emotional, and financial burdens. Gender inequalities are reinforced through the feminization of care, which naturalizes grandmothers’ centrality in daily support. Final considerations: Grandparenthood constitutes a structuring relational practice within Latin American families and is essential to collective protection and well-being. The findings highlight the need for public policies that recognize the social role of grandparents and address gender inequalities in caregiving.
