Abstract
Objective: To understand the experience of older adults in collective physical activity and its biopsychosocial effects. Methods: Qualitative study with 20 older adults (17 women), aged 60–83 years, attending a Sports Center in Recife, Brazil. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and a sociodemographic questionnaire, followed by content analysis. Results: Narratives revealed physical benefits (pain reduction, increased vitality), emotional gains (improved self-esteem, reduced sadness, better sleep), and social advantages (new friendships, expanded social networks, stronger sense of belonging). These outcomes contribute to greater autonomy, functionality, and overall quality of life. Longer engagement in physical activity appears to intensify these positive effects, particularly regarding autonomy and well-being. Collective programs play a central role in reducing isolation and reinforcing social interaction among older adults. Public and institutional policies should prioritize and expand such initiatives especially in vulnerable communities to maximize their impact on health and aging. Conclusion: Collective physical activity is essential for reducing isolation, strengthening social bonds, and promoting biopsychosocial well-being in older adults.
