Abstract
Objective: To identify the applicability of bedside ultrasound performed by nurses for assessing enteral and gastric tube placement and gastric residual volume in critically ill patients. Methods: An integrative review conducted in September 2023 using the Virtual Health Library and PubMed databases with the descriptors ultrasound, nurses, ultrasonography, and nurses. Results: The sample consisted of six articles, published between 2016 and 2022. The findings suggest that ultrasound can be applied at the bedside by nurses in critically ill patients to measure gastric residual volume, this being a scientifically based method to guide enteral nutrition, reducing interruptions in the diet. Another use of ultrasound by nurses is to confirm the position of the nasogastric tube (NGT) and nasoenteric tube (SNE), providing agility in the release of the diet and less exposure to x-rays. Final considerations: Bedside ultrasound performed by nurses is an effective and safe tool in the care of critically ill patients, supporting enteral nutrition and minimizing risks and delays in care.
