Abstract
Objectives: To assess the level of knowledge about HIV/AIDS among dental surgeons in the state of São Paulo and to analyse their perception of the availability of rapid oral tests for diagnosis. Methods: A cross-sectional, exploratory, and descriptive study. Invitations were sent to 87,467 dental surgeons with active registration with the São Paulo State Dental Council to respond to two independent online questionnaires, with no association between them, made available from March to April 2021: the HIV Knowledge Questionnaire adapted for Brazil (HIV-K-Q-43) and the other on perceptions of the test offering. Results: 701 responded to the HIV knowledge questionnaire (HIV-K-Q-43), and the majority (75%) answered the items correctly, with an average of 37.4%, a minimum of 28, and a maximum of 42 questions. The second questionnaire was answered by 477 dental surgeons, predominantly female (65.41%), with more than 20 years of training (53%), specialization (56.21%), and dental clinic owners (52.13%). The perception of these professionals is that it is possible to offer rapid oral testing for HIV diagnosis. Conclusion: Dental surgeons have a high level of knowledge about HIV/AIDS and are considering the possibility of offering oral testing for diagnosis and professional practice in controlling the spread of HIV/AIDS.
