Abstract

Objective: To investigate the association between food consumption and the presence of signs and symptoms suggestive of dysbiosis and intestinal hyperpermeability in polypharmacy users. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with adult and elderly polypharmacy users, using an electronic questionnaire. Signs and symptoms of intestinal hyperpermeability were assessed using a validated instrument and classified as “non-priority” (low/mild) and “priority” (moderate/high). Nutritional status was assessed by body mass index, and food consumption was classified according to the VIGITEL methodology. Statistical analyses were performed in Stata 17.0, using chi-square tests, Fisher's exact test, and simple logistic regression, adopting a significance level of 5%. Results: A total of 167 individuals participated, mostly women (76.65%) and over 60 years of age (38.92%), with a prevalence of overweight (65.27%). A significant association was observed between priority for treatment of intestinal hyperpermeability and regular consumption of sweets, pasta, and soft drinks (OR = 2.60; 95% CI: 1.0–6.78; p = 0.045), as well as with the amount of coffee consumed (OR = 2.49; 95% CI: 1.09–5.72; p = 0.028). Anti-inflammatory drugs and analgesics also showed a significant association (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The consumption of sweets, sugary drinks, pasta, coffee, canned foods, and sausages was associated with the occurrence of dysbiosis and intestinal hyperpermeability in individuals using polypharmacy.
