Abstract
Objective: To analyze the profile of hospitalizations and deaths due to sepsis in children under one year of age in the state of Maranhão, from 2015 to 2024. Methods: Epidemiological, population-based, descriptive, and retrospective study using data from the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH/SUS) and the Mortality Information System (SIM) of DATASUS. Results: During the analyzed period, 2,332 hospitalizations and 605 deaths due to sepsis were recorded among children under one year of age, with a 64.6% increase in hospitalizations and a 3.8% reduction in deaths. The number of hospitalizations ranged from 178 cases in 2015 to 293 in 2024, while deaths fluctuated between 49 and 78. There was a predominance of males, accounting for 50.3% to 65.9% of hospitalizations and up to 66.7% of deaths. The overall average hospital stay was 14.65 days, ranging from 12.9 to 17.4 days. More than 70% of notifications were concentrated in the municipalities of São Luís and Imperatriz, which also recorded the highest absolute numbers of deaths. Conclusion: Sepsis in children under one year of age remains a major public health challenge in Maranhão, requiring strengthened neonatal care and expanded healthcare capacity.
