Abstract
Objective: To investigate the correlation between anxiety, depression, stress, and cigarette use among university students, analyzing the emotional and behavioral factors associated with smoking and its implications for mental health. Methods: This is a quantitative descriptive study conducted with 84 university students aged 18 years or older, recruited through online invitations. Data collection was carried out anonymously using structured questionnaires, including the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND), and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, with calculations of means, frequencies, and correlations to identify associations between anxiety, depression levels, and smoking patterns. Results: A considerable prevalence of smoking was observed among university students, with a predominance of daily and long-term use, frequently associated with moderate levels of anxiety and low motivation to quit. The findings also indicate that smoking is often used as a coping mechanism to manage stress and academic demands. Conclusion: The results highlight the need for institutional strategies focused on mental health promotion, smoking prevention, and psychological support for university students, contributing to a healthier and more conscious academic environment.
