Abstract

Objective: Analyze the influence of social media on body self-perception and the development of eating disorders in young women. Literature review: Historically, the female body has been subjected to rules, expectations, and judgments imposed by society, shaped by cultural, religious, and political values. Thus, it ceases to be understood solely as a biological structure and begins to acquire symbolic meanings, becoming a marker of belonging, social acceptance, and even personal worth. Intense social media use, especially on visually driven platforms such as Instagram, amplifies social comparison, the pursuit of external validation, and the internalization of unrealistic beauty standards. These elements heighten body dissatisfaction, lower self-esteem, and increase vulnerability to dysfunctional eating behaviors. It was also observed that the female body, historically controlled by social norms, becomes even more susceptible to symbolic pressures mediated through the digital environment. Final considerations: Prolonged and uncritical exposure to idealized content can significantly contribute to psychosocial risks related to body image and eating behaviors.
