Abstract

Objective: To analyze the evolution of Brazilian polio vaccination coverage between 2017 and 2024, considering regional and temporal variations. Methods: This is an epidemiological, descriptive, and retrospective study, using data from the Informatics Department of the Unified Health System regarding first-dose (IPV) and booster (OPV) coverage in Brazilian regions. Results: The study showed a sharp reduction in coverage between 2019 and 2021, followed by a partial recovery from 2022 onwards. National coverage of IPV (inactivated polio vaccine) decreased from 84.19% (2019) to 71.04% (2021), reaching 90.37% in 2024. Coverage of OPV (oral polio vaccine) varied from 68.45% (2019) to 54.61% (2021), reaching 87.93% in 2024. No region consistently maintained the 95% target set by the Ministry of Health, although the South presented the best indicators, and the North and Northeast stand out as the most vulnerable regions. Conclusion: Polio vaccination coverage in Brazil showed advances and setbacks, highlighting weaknesses in maintaining herd immunity – particularly the socioeconomic and structural inequalities between regions. Therefore, the study reinforces the issue of vaccination as a collective commitment, supported by continuous public policies, effective communication, and strengthening of primary care.
