Abstract
Objective: To compare the latency of infraclavicular block between the use of bupivacaine alone and bupivacaine combined with lidocaine in forearm fracture surgeries. Methods: A randomized clinical study conducted at Hospital Maradei (Belém, PA, Brazil) including 42 patients. Epidemiological profile, pain intensity (VAS), and muscle strength (BMRC) were assessed at 5 and 10 minutes post-block in the control group (0.5% bupivacaine) and the intervention group (0.25% bupivacaine plus 1% lidocaine). Results: The groups were comparable regarding sex and BMI; however, the intervention group showed a higher proportion of ASA I patients (76.2%; p=0.0443) and individuals with diabetes mellitus. A statistically significant reduction in pain was observed in the intervention group at 5 minutes (p=0.0028) and 10 minutes (p=0.0038). No significant differences in muscle strength were found between groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: The anesthetic combination accelerated sensory latency without anticipating immediate motor block. The study highlights the safety of the technique and underscores the need for further research on the total duration of analgesia in this population.
