Abstract

Objective: To highlight the importance of health education during pregnancy and early childhood for achieving and maintaining oral health, especially with a view to preventing tooth decay. Methods: This study used the following databases as research sources: Scielo, Portal BVS, Pubmed, and Google Scholar, with the descriptors: Pediatric Dentistry, Caries, Early Childhood, Pregnant Women. Articles published in Portuguese, English, or Spanish between 2015 and 2025 that directly addressed dental caries in children aged 0 to 5 years, with an emphasis on educational and preventive actions aimed at pregnant women, parents, or caregivers, were included. The exclusion criteria were theses, dissertations, undergraduate theses, and books, as well as opinion articles, duplicate studies, simple event abstracts, and publications that did not present a clear methodology. Results: Educational programs are effective in modifying behaviors, acting from gestation onwards and without discontinuity, to maintain motivation. Considering the reality of the population is fundamental in planning, along with multidisciplinary action, combined with the action of community agents. Final considerations: Educational practices initiated prenatally and maintained throughout childhood have a significant impact on reducing tooth decay rates and fostering healthy habits.
