Abstract

Objective: To estimate the prevalence and analyze the factors associated with mortality in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Methods: Quantitative, cross-sectional, retrospective study conducted using medical records of patients hospitalized in three ICUs. Non-probabilistic convenience sample consisting of 304 medical records. Analysis of factors associated with mortality was performed using logistic regression. Results: A higher prevalence was observed in patients aged 60 years or older (n=167; 54.9%), male (n=172; 56.6%), from the emergency room (n=161; 53.0%), with a length of stay in the ICU of 1 to 7 days (n=215; 70.7%), and on invasive mechanical ventilation (n=164; 53.9%). In addition, 14.1% (n=43) had cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA). The variables significantly associated with death were length of stay in the ICU of 1 to 7 days (OR: 5.16), IMV (OR: 22.80), use of vasoactive drugs (OR: 6.84), and occurrence of CRP (OR: 21.76). Conclusion: Factors such as length of stay in the ICU from 1 to 7 days, use of IMV, vasoactive drugs, and occurrence of CRP considerably increase the risk of mortality in critically ill patients. The results contribute to the knowledge about the profile of patients admitted to ICUs and help identify conditions associated with worse outcomes, favoring more targeted care strategies.
