Abstract

Objective: Analyze the physiology and histology of the duodenum, the effects of protein-energy malnutrition and the potentialities and therapeutic risks of cannabidiol. Literature review: This review addresses physiological, histological, and therapeutic aspects of the duodenum, nutrition, and the use of cannabidiol (CBD). It examines the duodenum's diminished role in nutrient digestion and absorption, highlighting structures such as Brunner's glands, villi, and microvilli, which are essential for mucosal protection and enhanced absorption. The effects of protein-energy malnutrition on fetal development are also discussed, including growth restriction and increased susceptibility to metabolic diseases in adulthood. CBD's interactions with the endocannabinoid system (CB1 and CB2), associated with anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and hepatoprotective effects, and its influence on energy homeostasis and the response to nutritional deficiency are explored. Final considerations: The study integrates physiological and histological knowledge of the duodenum, showing the effects of protein-energy malnutrition and the therapeutic potential of canabidiol, highlighting the role of the endocannabinoid system in energy homeostase and digestive health. There is a lack of conclusive clinical studies regarding the safety and hepatic toxicity of CBD in different doses, which restricts clinical practice.
