Abstract

Objective: To understand the effects on the behavior of premature newborns admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of a General Reference Hospital, considering the presence and absence of the maternal figure. Methods: This is an observational, ethnographic study conducted with seven (7) premature newborns over the course of one year, using an adaptation of the Bick method. The qualitative research interpreted the behaviors of premature newborns in the light of psychoanalysis, emphasizing the importance of the maternal figure’s presence in preterm infants within the NICU. Results: Maternal presence was associated with responses of calmness, relaxation, and reduced crying in infants, whereas maternal absence triggered agitation, persistent crying, and withdrawal. Physical contact, holding, and maternal speech proved to be effective resources for emotional regulation and for strengthening the affective bond, thus building an environment of greater psychological security and well-being for the baby during hospitalization. Conclusion: Maternal presence in the NICU positively contributes to the emotional regulation of premature infants, providing affective presence that supports the development of the infant’s psyche. As challenges, the study highlights the adaptations of the Bick method to the hospital setting and the transfer/discharge of babies to other neonatal units outside the research site.
