Abstract

Objective: To analyze the level of theoretical knowledge of anesthesiologists practicing in Belém (PA) regarding mechanical ventilation. Methods: A cross-sectional, quantitative study conducted with anesthesiologists and residents. The profile was characterized using sociodemographic and professional variables, which were correlated with performance on a 10-question technical questionnaire. Results: The sample presented a mean score of 7.82 ± 1.51 correct answers. Regarding profile, professionals aged 40–49 years (8.5 ± 1.38) and those with more than 10 years of practice (8.5 ± 1.76) achieved the best results, whereas the group aged 60 years or older showed the lowest performance (6.0 ± 2.83). Board-certified specialists from the Brazilian Society of Anesthesiology demonstrated higher mean scores compared with residents and general practitioners. High mastery was observed in topics related to positive end-expiratory pressure in laparoscopy; however, significant gaps were identified in complex subjects: interpretation of the pressure–volume curve (Q7) and permissive hypercapnia (Q8) showed low accuracy rates, particularly among physicians without specialization (41.7% and 33.3%, respectively). Conclusion: Knowledge is high and homogeneous among specialists; however, the decline in performance among senior professionals and the gaps in advanced respiratory mechanics underscore the need for continuing education programs focused on patient safety in the Amazon region.
