Abstract

Objective: To analyze the challenges faced by mothers in the context of pediatric palliative care. Literature review: The findings demonstrated that mothers provide continuous attention to their hospitalized child in palliative care. They assume roles such as sensitive clinical observation, interpretation of nonverbal cues, and constant emotional support. The hospitalization of children with chronic, complex, and/or life-threatening illnesses causes physical and emotional overload for mothers. The reorganization of family life around the child's hospitalization and feelings of anxiety, fear, exhaustion, and uncertainty regarding the prognosis are concomitant challenges. It was evident that social support, systematic emotional support, active listening, clear communication, and family participation in therapeutic decisions contribute to reducing maternal suffering and strengthening family resilience. The effective integration of the multidisciplinary team proved crucial for the humanization of care. Final considerations: The study highlights the centrality of hospital mothering associated with the interaction of the health team for the promotion of pediatric palliative care. As a limitation, the intentional selection of studies is highlighted, which restricts the scope and generalizability of the results.
