Abstract
Objective: To conduct a review study on plant-based supplementation, highlighting its nutritional potential and the health benefits of bioactive compounds for the elderly population. Methods: This is an integrative review, with searches conducted in the PubMed, Lilacs, BVS, and Science Direct databases using the descriptors "Aging" AND "Herbal Plants Supplementation" AND "Bioactive Compounds," between the years 2021 and 2025. Results: One hundred articles were selected according to the inclusion criteria, and after careful reading, eight articles were eligible. The bioactive compounds flavonoids, polyphenols, terpenes, catechins, and curcuminoids emerge as the main secondary metabolites found in the cited supplements and were responsible for the antioxidant, anti- inflammatory, neuroprotective, and cytoprotective effects. Final considerations: The analyzed studies show that supplements containing plant extracts have significant therapeutic potential in the aging process, especially due to their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and regenerative properties. Recent literature highlights the role of bioactive compounds of plant origin, especially flavonoids, polyphenols, tannins, terpenes, and other secondary metabolites, as promising agents in promoting longevity and overall health.
