Abstract

Objective: To investigate the benefits of CoQ10 supplementation in patients with SAMS. Methods: Systematic review based on PRISMA, which included randomized clinical trials controlled by placebo that evaluated the effect of CoQ10 supplementation in patients with SRMS. Articles were retrieved from databases (PubMed; Cochrane Library) and selected by two authors. A meta-analysis was performed based on the results found in the included studies, comparing the relief of SAMS in patients treated with CoQ10 and controls who received placebo. Results: A total of 169 studies were identified, of which nine were included, emcompassing 420 patients with SAMS, randomized in 216 cases and 204 controls. The meta-analysis conducted to investigate the effects of CoQ10 supplementation in relieving SAMS demonstrated a trend toward benefit in mitigating SAMS symptons in CoQ10 cases (RR = 1.75), however, the differences between these groups was not significant (p = 0.076). Final considerations: Four of the nine selected studies described a significant reduction in SAMS in the group of patients treated with CoQ10, compared to controls, however, the efficacy of CoQ10 supplementation in alleviating SAMS was not proven in the meta-analysis.
