Abstract

Objective: To identify and characterize the predominant leadership style among nurses in the Adult Intensive Care Units and Medical Clinic of a university hospital. Methods: This is a descriptive and analytical field study with a cross-sectional design, conducted with a convenience sample of 32 nurses. Data collection took place at a single point in time, using a sociodemographic and occupational questionnaire, the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ), and the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ). The Binomial test was used to assess associations between sociodemographic variables, leadership styles, and work units, from August to September 2025. Results: Transformational leadership was predominant (87.5%), followed by transactional leadership (12.5%), with no occurrence of laissez-faire leadership and no significant differences between units. Authentic leadership presented moderate levels, associated with institutional service time between 11 and 20 years and the night shift. Conclusion: The study contributed to the understanding of the influence of nurse leadership on the quality of care, supporting strategies for improving management and patient safety in the hospital context.
