Abstract

Objective: To evaluate whether regular physical exercise affects the muscle quality of older adults, considering strength, endurance, and body composition. Methods: A cross-sectional and analytical study was conducted with older adults from the Open University for Older Adults (UniAPI) and the Senior Citizens' Center (CCI) in Anápolis-GO. The sample, defined by sample size calculation, included 160 participants who answered two questionnaires and performed three physical tests. Physical activity level, quality of life, muscle performance, and body composition were assessed to analyze the relationship between physical exercise and muscle quality. Results: There was a predominance of females, with a mean age between 70 and 79 years. Most presented a BMI compatible with overweight or obesity and a high percentage of body fat. Even so, handgrip strength and performance in the sit-to-stand test remained within normal limits for most of the sample. No statistically significant differences were observed between active and sedentary older adults regarding strength, body composition, functional performance, and domains of the WHOQOL-OLD. Conclusion: Although there are no statistically significant differences, the findings suggest that physical activity contributes to maintaining functionality, reinforcing the importance of structured and supervised interventions for healthier and more autonomous aging.
