Abstract

Objective: To describe the relevance of health literacy in the context of cardio-oncology, highlighting its influence on treatment adherence, self-care, and clinical outcomes in patients exposed to therapies with cardiotoxic potential. Literature review: Health literacy is associated with a better understanding of health information, recognition of symptoms, navigation of the health system, and treatment adherence. Factors such as advanced age, low educational level, lower income, comorbidities, polypharmacy, and inequalities in access to health services influence health literacy levels and increase vulnerabilities. The complexity of treatment, the need for continuous monitoring, and difficulties in communication and integration among services constitute additional barriers. However, scientific production in cardio-oncology remains limited, and the use of validated instruments for its assessment is infrequent, highlighting relevant gaps for clinical practice and research. Final considerations: The incorporation of health literacy into cardio-oncology may improve clinical communication, reduce vulnerabilities, and guide more effective educational interventions. Strategies based on clear communication are essential to promote treatment adherence, self-care, and better clinical outcomes, especially in contexts marked by inequalities in access to health services.
