Abstract
Objective:To analyze the sociodemographic, clinical, length of stay, and cost factors associated with hospitalizations for puerperal mastitis in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) between 2018 and 2022. Methods: Cross-sectional study using data from the Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS) including all hospitalizations for puerperal mastitis in the SUS between 2018 and 2022. Length of stay and costs per hospitalization were analyzed according to age group, region, and type of institution using descriptive statistics and multiple contingency tables. Results:11,279 hospitalizations were analyzed. The highest number of cases occurred in the Southeast region (41.8%), in self-declared brown women (45.7%), in the 18-29 age group (62.5%), and in public institutions (66.8%). SUS (Brazilian Public Health System) expenses totaled R$ 2,568,714.80, with an average cost of R$ 227.74 per hospitalization, being higher in private institutions (p < 0.001), and an average length of stay of 4.5 ± 3.6 days for surgical treatment and 5.2 ± 3.4 days for clinical treatment. Conclusion: Hospitalizations for puerperal mastitis in the SUS were more frequent in the Southeast region, among young women who self-identified as mixed-race. The length of stay was longer in the public sector and for clinical treatment, while the costs were higher in the private sector and for surgical treatment.
