Abstract

Objective: To evaluate, through an in vitro study, the influence of different surface protection methods on water sorption and diametral compressive strength of resin-modified glass ionomer cements (RMGICs), considering two commercial brands and two evaluation periods (24 hours and 4 months). Methods: Sixty specimens were prepared and distributed according to material, surface protection protocol (no protection, dental adhesive, or fluoride varnish), and storage time. Water sorption was determined by mass variation at the established periods. Diametral compressive strength was assessed using a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed by three-way factorial ANOVA after verification of normality (α = 5%). Results: No significant differences in compressive strength were observed among materials, protection protocols, or storage times (p > 0.05). At 24 hours, water sorption was influenced by both material and surface protection, with an increase for one material under adhesive application and a reduction for the other under the same condition. After 4 months, sorption values became similar among the groups. Conclusion: RMGICs demonstrated similar mechanical performance; however, the interaction between material and surface protection influenced initial sorption, with a tendency toward stabilization over time.
