Abstract

Objective: To compare the practice of physical activity, associated barriers, quality of life, sleep standard and mental health indicators among students of nursing and dentistry courses of a higher education institution. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive and quantitative study was conducted with 260 students, 117 of which were in nursing and 146 in dentistry. Identification questionnaire, regular physical activity questionnaire, PSQI and HAD scale were applied. The study was approved by the CEP, under CAAE 83345024.6.0000.5084 opinion. Results: The majority were women (78.6% in nursing; 79.5% in dentistry), with a predominance of 18 to 21 years old. The burden of studies was the main barrier to physical activity among dental students (45.9%), while domestic tasks prevailed in nursing (45.3%). The average of sleep hours was lower than recommended (6.6h and 6.8h). The quality of life was classified as "good" by 47.9% (nursing) and 55.5% (dentistry). Anxiety symptoms were frequent in both courses, with more than half reporting tension "from time to time". Conclusion: Students exhibit structural psychosocial overload, insufficient sleep, unbalanced physical activity, course-specific barriers and intense anxiety-depressive symptoms, demanding multiprofessional institutional interventions that consider curricular particularities to promote well-being in health education.
