Abstract
Objective: To analyze the clinical and epidemiological profile of hepatitis-related hospitalizations reported in the state of Piauí, Brazil, between 2014 and 2023. Methods: This was an epidemiological, documentary, quantitative, descriptive, and retrospective study. Data were extracted from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System, based on notifications recorded in the Notifiable Diseases Information System. Results: A total of 1,102 hepatitis cases were reported in Piauí, with 33.7% occurring in the 40–59 age group, 57.7% in males, 74.6% in mixed-race (parda) individuals, and 34.5% in those with incomplete primary education. Laboratory confirmation was obtained in 95.0% of cases, with food/waterborne transmission accounting for 11.0% of infections. Additionally, most cases had reactive serology for HBsAg (43.3%) and anti-HCV (40.7%). The highest number of notifications was recorded in the capital city of Teresina (70.5%). Conclusion: These findings outline the predominant profile of reported hepatitis cases, indicating that the disease primarily affects adult males of mixed ethnicity (parda) with low educational attainment. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of research to enhance understanding of the distribution and associated factors of viral hepatitis in this region.
