Abstract

Objective: To analyze the association between bariatric surgery using the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (BGYR) technique and alcohol consumption in the postoperative period, considering metabolic, behavioral, and psychological aspects. Methods: This is an integrative literature review conducted in the databases Virtual Health Library (VHL), PubMed, SciELO, and CAPES Journal Portal. Studies published between 2015 and 2025 in Portuguese, English, and Spanish were included, addressing alcohol consumption after bariatric surgery, especially BGYR. Results: Nineteen studies comprised the final sample, including cohort studies, observational studies, and reviews. Most studies identified an association between BGYR and an increased risk of problematic alcohol use, particularly after the first or second postoperative year. Changes in alcohol pharmacokinetics, a prior history of binge eating, and the presence of psychiatric disorders were frequently related factors. However, some studies did not observe a significant increase in alcohol use disorder in short-term follow-up. Final considerations: The findings suggest that BGYR may be associated with increased vulnerability to alcohol consumption in certain patient profiles, reinforcing the importance of preoperative screening and continuous multidisciplinary follow-up.
