Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of sunscreen use and identify factors associated with its neglect in adults. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study conducted with 176 participants aged 18 years or older in the municipality of Palmas, Tocantins. Sociodemographic variables, sun exposure habits, sunscreen use and reapplication patterns, knowledge about ultraviolet radiation, and use of physical protection were analyzed. Descriptive and bivariate analysis was performed, with calculation of odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Results: High awareness of the risks of ultraviolet radiation was observed (97.2%); however, 57.4% reported never reapplying sunscreen. In addition, 33.5% of participants are exposed to the sun between 10 am and 3 pm. Female sex (OR = 4.44) and the use of physical protection (OR = 3.00) showed a statistically significant association with regular use of the product. There was no significant association between use and the variables age or exposure time. Conclusion: It is concluded that isolated knowledge about the risks does not translate into adequate photoprotection practices, highlighting the need for health education strategies capable of promoting effective behavioral change.
