Abstract

Objective: To report the experience of a health education initiative carried out in a Family Health Strategy in a municipality in the metropolitan region of Belém, addressing the influence of lifestyle habits on the control of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Experience report: This is a descriptive qualitative study in the form of an experience report. The health education initiative was planned in three stages: production of educational materials, a sensitization workshop and discussion circle, and the performance of glycemic tests and rapid tests. Final considerations: It is concluded that, although Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is common, significant knowledge gaps persist that directly interfere with patients’ self-care and glycemic control. The experience demonstrated that health education strategies, especially those based on accessible language, have great potential to promote behavioral changes in coping with T2DM and to strengthen the bond between the university and the community.
