Abstract

Objective: To analyze the risks for dysphagia and nutritional risk in patients treated in the emergency department of a University Hospital. Methods: Cross-sectional, quantitative and analytical study with 99 adult and elderly patients admitted to the emergency department. Data collection was performed using the Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10) screening instrument for dysphagia risk and the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) – short version for nutritional risk. Statistical analysis was performed with a significance level of 5%. Results: There was a predominance of elderly men; dysphagia risk was observed in 39.4% of the sample and nutritional risk in 70.7% (47.5% at nutritional risk and 23.2% malnourished), in addition to a significant association between dysphagia and nutritional risks, demonstrating that both conditions are frequent and clinically relevant in this context. The concomitant occurrence of these conditions reinforces the need for specialized attention considering the possible direct impact on patients’ clinical prognosis. Conclusion: It is concluded that there is a high simultaneous occurrence of dysphagia risk and nutritional impairment among patients treated in the emergency department. The importance of implementing systematic screening protocols is highlighted, as they are fundamental strategies to improve care and promote better clinical outcomes in this population, despite the limitations inherent to the cross-sectional study design.
