Abstract
Objective: To map the knowledge of women receiving care at Primary Health Care Units (Unidades Básicas de Saúde – UBS) in the Federal District, Brazil, regarding cervical cancer, and preventive practices, with a focus on the role of female communication networks and lay knowledge in the construction of health literacy. Methods: Thirty-one individual structured interviews were conducted addressing cervical cancer and HPV, and the data were analyzed using Content Analysis. Results: The findings indicate that although most participants had previously undergone cervical cancer screening, significant gaps persist in their knowledge about cervical cancer. Fragmented understandings, imprecise associations, fear, and conceptual misunderstandings were prevalent, with female communication networks, personal experiences, and mass media identified as central sources of information. A marked heterogeneity in health literacy was observed, characterized by the coexistence of biomedical knowledge and lay rationalities. Conclusion: Women’s knowledge regarding cervical cancer appears heterogeneous and largely constructed outside the clinical setting, underscoring the need for health education strategies that engage with lay knowledge and strengthen health literacy within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS).
