Abstract
Objective: To associate cardiovascular risk with health-related factors in manual workers (MW) and non-manual workers (NMW). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 102 workers. Cardiovascular risk was assessed by the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). The dependent variables were: cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), mental health [anxiety (BAI), depression (BDI)], working conditions [working hours (WH), absenteeism], and QoL. Results: NMW with cardiovascular risk (62.9%; p=0.026) are more likely to have WH >40 h/week. MW and NMW with cardiovascular risk showed higher WH (MW: p=0.002; NMW: p=0.039), lower values in number of laps (MW: p=0.001; NMW: p=0.020), speed (MW: p=0.004; NMW: p=0.005), distance covered (MW: p=0.001; NMW: p=0.020) and VO2max (MW: p=0.004; NMW: p=0.005). In NMW with cardiovascular risk, the physical component (PCS) was lower (p=0.009). In MW, cardiovascular risk was directly associated with WH (p=0.012) and inversely with speed (p=0.033) and VO2max (p=0.033). In NMW, this association was direct for BDI (p=0.013) and inverse for the physical component (p=0.041). In the total sample, cardiovascular risk was directly associated with BDI (p=0.023) and inversely with the physical component (p=0.039). Conclusion: MW showed worse CRF, while NMW and the total sample showed higher depressive symptoms and worse QoL.
