Abstract
Objective: To estimate the prevalence of sarcopenia in elderly cancer patients and correlate the diagnosis with clinical variables such as BMI, frequency of falls, calf circumference, and the result of the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG). Methods: Cross-sectional study with 110 elderly patients in the oncology outpatient clinic in Sorocaba. Data collection included an interview, the adapted SARC-F questionnaire, dynamometry for handgrip strength, calf circumference measurement, and the TUG. Statistical analysis used logistic regression to evaluate the correlation of variables with sarcopenia. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia was estimated, with 51,3% of individuals with calf circumference suggestive of muscle loss presenting the condition (p < 0.001), highlighting the relevance of this variable as a predictor. The handgrip strength test (dynamometry) presented an AUC Curve of 0.746 (74,6% probability of correct classification). Furthermore, 74.5% of the total sample obtained TUG results suggestive of frailty or risk of falling. Conclusion: The study estimated the prevalence of sarcopenia in the sample of elderly cancer patients and demonstrated a strong correlation between calf circumference and the diagnosis. As a cross-sectional study, it was not possible to estimate sarcopenia as a risk factor for complications; thus, longitudinal studies are necessary.
