Abstract
Objective: To describe the glycemic and lipid profile and their association to the body composition of patients enrolled in the bariatric surgery program before and after surgery, undergoing sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Federal University of Pernambuco. Methods: This was a cross-sectional, quantitative clinical study, designed as a case series, conducted at the surgery outpatient clinic of the Hospital das Clínicas, Federal University of Pernambuco. A total of 32 patients were included, and data were collected between July 2021 and July 2024. Results: Among the 32 patients, 13 underwent gastric bypass and 19 sleeve gastrectomy. Most participants were female (93.8%). There were significant differences in all variables when comparing pre- and postoperative periods. However, when comparing between surgical techniques, only triglycerides showed a statistically significant difference in the gastric bypass group. Conclusion: The findings suggest that bariatric surgery, regardless of the technique used, is effective in improving metabolic parameters.
