Abstract
Objective: To analyze the perceptions of rehabilitation professionals regarding the (im)possibilities of integrating palliative care and rehabilitation. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional field study with a qualitative approach, conducted at two Specialized Rehabilitation Centers and an Association of Parents and Friends of the Exceptional (APAE) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Twenty-one health professionals participated, selected via convenience sampling. Data collection was carried out through focus groups guided by a semi-structured script, and data were analyzed using content analysis. Results: Professionals held heterogeneous conceptions of palliative care—often associating it with comfort and the end of life, as well as linking it to specific diagnoses. Weaknesses in professional training were identified, characterized by sporadic and superficial approaches. Regarding the integration of rehabilitation and palliative care, participants recognized possibilities related to the humanization of care and multiprofessional practice, alongside limitations linked to the lack of institutional guidelines, fragmented service organization, and professional insecurity. Conclusion: The integration of rehabilitation and palliative care appears to be in its early stages yet promising, contingent upon professional training and service organization. The absence of certain professional categories in the study is highlighted as a limitation.
