Abstract
Objective: To understand the experiences and challenges faced in breastfeeding among mothers assisted in Primary Health Care (PHC), based on their own perspectives. Methods: This is an exploratory qualitative study conducted in Primary Health Care in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná. Ten mothers of young children receiving care in PHC participated, with sample size defined by theoretical saturation. Data were collected through problem-centered semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic content analysis. Results: Four thematic categories emerged: maternal insecurity regarding milk sufficiency; physical pain and management of latching difficulties; breastfeeding between emotional bonding and the pressure of the maternal ideal; and gaps in professional support associated with autonomous information-seeking. Participants reported physical and emotional distress, self-management of complications, and lack of qualified guidance from health services. Conclusion: The findings highlight the insufficiency of support within PHC throughout the pregnancy–puerperal cycle, directly impacting maternal experiences, which are marked by insecurity, distress, and the need for self-management. These results reinforce the importance of care strategies that recognize and value women’s lived experiences in the breastfeeding process.
