Abstract

Objective: To apply the PEACE-Q instrument to medical students and evaluate their knowledge about palliative care. Methods: This is an observational, cross-sectional, descriptive study with a quantitative approach, conducted with students from the 1st to the 12th semester of a medical school in Campo das Vertentes. The PEACE-Q instrument, composed of 33 items distributed across nine domains, was applied in two stages (test and retest). Reliability analysis included Cohen's Kappa coefficient, McNemar's test, and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), adopting a significance level of 5%. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the total scores of the test and the retest. In the comparison between groups, the internship students presented a higher total score than the clinical cycle students. After correction for multiple comparisons using the Benjamini-Hochberg method, only the domains Philosophy of palliative care, Side effects of opioids, and Nausea and vomiting remained significant. Conclusion: The PEACE-Q showed moderate temporal stability and low internal consistency in this sample of medical students. Knowledge in palliative care was still incomplete, especially in clinical areas. These findings suggest the need for greater inclusion of the topic in medical training.
