Abstract
Objective: To analyze the biopsychosocial aspects related to the limitations experienced, quality of life, and psychological well-being of people affected by leprosy. Methods: This is a qualitative study conducted in a philanthropic reference institution in Teresina, Piauí, dedicated to the care of people with leprosy, from April to June 2025. The sample consisted of 23 participants selected by convenience sampling. Data were collected through interviews and open-ended questionnaires, which were recorded, transcribed, and submitted to interpretative analysis. Results: The feelings expressed by individuals living with leprosy are marked by various emotions such as sadness, fear, shame, exclusion, and isolation, resulting both from the physical damage caused by the disease and from social prejudice. This highlights the social, cultural, and structural stigma historically associated with the disease, which further intensifies the illness process. Conclusion: The reports revealed the occurrence of social withdrawal, discrimination, and self-isolation, highlighting the social, cultural, and structural stigma that has historically accompanied the disease, which further exacerbates the process of illness.
