Adolescent pregnancy in Imperatriz-MA: socioeconomic factors and associated educational and psychosocial impacts

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the socioeconomic and environmental factors associated with adolescent pregnancy and its impacts on adolescents in the municipality of Imperatriz-MA. Methods: This is a quantitative, descriptive and analytical study conducted with 47 adolescents with a history of pregnancy during adolescence, receiving care at a Primary Health Care Unit. Data were collected through sociodemographic questionnaires, obstetric forms, and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, including Chi-square test, Spearman correlation and Student’s t-test. Results: There was a predominance of adolescents aged 16 to 17 years, with low income and living in peripheral areas. School dropout rate was high (59.6%), and significant financial impact was reported in 93.6% of families. Despite access to information on sexuality, failures in contraceptive use were observed. Psychosocial aspects revealed moderate levels of anxiety, variations in emotional support and low community participation. Conclusion: Adolescent pregnancy is a multifactorial phenomenon associated with socioeconomic vulnerability and significant educational, financial and psychosocial impacts, highlighting the need for integrated strategies focused on sexual education, school retention and psychosocial support.
