Abstract

Objective: To analyze the epidemiological factors associated with congenital syphilis in the municipality of Imperatriz, Maranhão, from 2022 to 2024. Methods: This is an observational ecological, quantitative, and descriptive study based on data obtained from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) and the Live Birth Information System (SINASC). The analyzed variables include sociodemographic and clinical information. Results: A total of 349 cases of congenital syphilis were reported in Imperatriz among residents of the state of Maranhão. A higher frequency was observed among brown-skinned mothers with completed secondary education and of reproductive age. Although 97.13% of pregnant women attended prenatal care, 51% were diagnosed only at the time of delivery or curettage. Among neonates, 97.42% presented recent congenital syphilis, and 98% of diagnoses were made within the first six days of life; however, 3.5% progressed to death. It is also noteworthy that 77% of the partners of pregnant women did not receive treatment. Conclusion: The high frequency of congenital syphilis, associated with failures in diagnosis and treatment, indicates the need to strengthen epidemiological surveillance and public health policies.
