Oral manifestations of Treacher Collins syndrome: a case report

Abstract

Objective: To present, through a clinical case report, the main oral manifestations associated with Treacher Collins Syndrome, expanding clinical and diagnostic knowledge about this condition. Case  details: An eight-year-old male patient diagnosed with Treacher Collins Syndrome was evaluated at the Dentistry Service of the University Hospital of the Federal University of Sergipe. The extraoral examination revealed typical features of the syndrome, including facial asymmetry, severe micrognathia, marked facial convexity, zygomatic hypoplasia, bilateral microtia, antimongoloid slant of the palpebral fissures, and the use of a tracheostomy. The intraoral examination revealed multiple oral conditions, such as a large amount of plaque and calculus, generalized chronic gingivitis, multiple active carious lesions, dental crowding, anterior open bite, root remnants, and a cleft palate. Final considerations: This case report highlights the complexity of craniofacial and oral manifestations associated with Treacher Collins Syndrome, especially when severe micrognathia, cleft palate, tracheostomy, high caries activity, and periodontal disease are present simultaneously. Understanding these alterations is essential for individualized, preventive, and interdisciplinary dental planning, contributing to improved oral health, functionality, and quality of life for the patient.
