Abstract
Objective: To conduct a technical and scientific update on conventional polymers used in Dentistry, based on polymethyl methacrylate, resulting from new materials that have emerged for the manufacture of removable prosthetic devices. Literature review: Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a transparent and rigid polymer, frequently used in various applications, including dental prostheses. It is produced from the polymerization of the methyl methacrylate monomer and has several properties such as high mechanical strength, low density, good adhesion to different substrates, resistance to heat and moisture, and also hardness, wear, compressive and tensile strength, flexural strength, dimensional stability, solubility, discoloration reactions, degradation and roughness. Despite its clinical shortcomings, PMMA is still considered the material of choice for the manufacture of complete dentures, and this material is being increasingly improved and researched to present satisfactory clinical, laboratory, aesthetic and biological characteristics, with longevity and success during its use. Final considerations: Heat-cured acrylic resin can still be considered the best material used for the fabrication of complete dentures, due to its high satisfaction rate, greater longevity, and clinical success, even today.
