Abstract

Objective: To verify the knowledge of public elementary school teachers about the science of Educational Speech-Language Pathology. Methods: Quantitative, cross-sectional study, approved by an Ethics Committee (5.750.062). Data collection was carried out using a structured questionnaire, applied via Google Forms, composed of characterization questions and Likert scale statements. 103 elementary school teachers from a municipality in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul participated. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics (Fisher's exact test and Cramer's V). Results: The majority of participants had postgraduate degrees (60.4%), worked in only one school (59.5%), and worked 40 hours per week (68.5%). Although a large part recognizes the importance of the educational speech-language pathologist's role, gaps were identified regarding the differentiation between clinical and educational practice, as well as a lack of specific training. There was a significant association between age group and perception of the speech-language pathology contribution to academic performance and to reading and writing.
Conclusion:
Teachers demonstrate general knowledge, but lack knowledge of specific aspects of Educational Speech-Language Pathology. This highlights the need to increase investments in continuing education and strengthen the integration between health and education.
