Abstract

Objective: To compare the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) and Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) methods in assessing the nutritional status of cancer patients undergoing preoperative intestinal ostomy creation. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional study with prospective data collection was conducted at a university referral hospital in Belém, Pará, between January and November 2025, involving adult cancer patients hospitalized for intestinal ostomy surgery. Data collection included sociodemographic, clinical, and anthropometric information, with nutritional assessment performed using the PG-SGA and malnutrition classification based on GLIM criteria. Results: The sample consisted of 29 patients with a mean age of 60.3 years. A high frequency of nutritional impairment was observed, characterized by recent weight loss and muscle mass depletion identified via mid-arm muscle circumference. The PG-SGA identified nutritional impairment in 66% of participants, whereas the GLIM classified 52% as malnourished. Substantial agreement was found between the methods, with no statistically significant difference. Conclusion: The ASG-PPP identified a greater degree of nutritional impairment than GLIM, with substantial agreement between the methods, reinforcing the importance of preoperative nutritional assessment and the need for studies with larger samples.
