Abstract

Objective: To analyze the indications, techniques, and contributions of performing skin biopsies in primary health care for the early diagnosis of skin cancer. Literature review: Skin cancer is the most prevalent neoplasm in Brazil, representing approximately 30% of all malignant tumors. The definitive diagnosis depends on performing a skin biopsy with histopathological analysis, considered the gold standard. Despite being a low-complexity outpatient procedure, its execution remains concentrated in specialized services within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), which may result in diagnostic delays and worse prognosis. The literature shows that PHC physicians have the technical competence to perform shave, punch, incisional, and excisional biopsies. Decentralizing this procedure can reduce waiting time, healthcare costs, and morbidity and mortality associated with late diagnosis. Final considerations: The systematic incorporation of skin biopsy into PHC represents a viable strategy aligned with SUS principles, contributing to greater effectiveness of care and strengthening early diagnosis of skin cancer.
